We are delighted to invite you to the 35th Bayard Rustin Community Breakfast on April 12, 2025, as we gather under the inspiring theme, “From the Margins to the Movement” from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum.
Founded by community members in 1990 and proudly established by the AIDS Action Committee (now a division of Fenway Health), the Bayard Rustin Community Breakfast has long served as an annual beacon of HIV/AIDS awareness, advocacy, and support for LGBTQ+ individuals, communities of color, and dedicated allies.
The event’s mission is to inform, affirm, and empower our community during the ongoing HIV/AIDS crisis. Through art and shared stories, we educate, sustain hope, and mobilize for a future where every individual can thrive.
Our theme honors the legacy of Bayard Rustin, whose vital role as the recognized architect of the March on Washington was publicly marginalized amidst leadership that was perceived as more palatable because Bayard was a gay man. His story reminds us that true leadership and visionary contributions often come from those pushed to the periphery of recognition.
In the same spirit, our event emphasizes the critical need to elevate and amplify Black Trans women, who, within an already marginalized LGBTQ+ community, face layered inequities, to truly spearhead the fight for social justice. Registration required.
During the event, the Belynda A. Dunn Award for Activism and Bayard Rustin Award for Courage will be presented, Awardees to be announced. This annual celebration is named in honor of Bayard Rustin, an openly gay, African-American civil rights leader.
ABOUT BAYARD RUSTIN
Bayard Rustin, one of the unsung heroes of the civil rights movement, was an openly gay, African-American leader actively engaged in social movements of the 1950s and 1960s. Bayard went on to become the chief organizer of the 1963 March on Washington. In 2013 he received the presidential medal of honor presented to him posthumously by President Obama for his work of social justice and change.
HISTORY OF AIDS ACTION
AIDS Action, now a division of Fenway Health, served as New England’s largest provider of services to people living with HIV/AIDS and populations at risk of infection. AIDS Action goes beyond the basics and provides programs designed to stabilize the lives of our clients so that they may focus on getting and remaining healthy. Please visit aac.org to learn more.
ABOUT THE BREAKFAST
Founded by members of the community in 1990 and created by AIDS Action Committee, now a division of Fenway Health. BRCB is an annual HIV/AIDS awareness event for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender+ people from communities of color to inform, affirm and empower us all in the continuing HIV/AIDS crisis. Historically, a central core to the Bayard Rustin Breakfast has been to use art—in all of its forms—as a strategy to educate, sustain hope and mobilize LGBTQ+ communities of color to become energized in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
This year’s Bayard Rustin Community Breakfast is dedicated to all those who continue to work towards getting to Zero infections caused by HIV/AIDS.
