Fellowship Content and Structure

The HMS-Fenway LGBTQIA+ Health Fellowship Program combines the resources of HMS and HMS’s teaching hospitals with Fenway Health, an internationally renowned Federally Qualified Health Center with 50 years of experience serving LGBTQIA+ communities, a rich patient base, and an embedded institute dedicated to LGBTQIA+ health education and training, advocacy, and research. HMS’s system-wide Sexual and Gender Minority Health Equity Initiative provides the ideal context for fellowship activities. Our fellows will have an opportunity to learn from preeminent leaders in the field of LGBTQIA+ health while engaging with a rich tapestry of Boston-area organizations that serve diverse LGBTQIA+ communities.

Clinical Activities (45%):

  • Each fellow will complete their outpatient continuity clinic at Beth Israel DeaconessFenway, where they will provide comprehensive primary care for a panel of diverse LGBTQIA+ patients.
  • Fellows will also rotate through clinical selectives across the HMS-Fenway network that are aligned with their interests and career goals. Examples include: LGBTQIA+ focused addiction recovery; dermatology; endocrinology; gender-care; hepatology; high resolution anoscopy; HIV care; intersex health care; mental and behavioral health care; nephrology; obstetrics and gynecology; reproductive endocrinology; sexual health; urology; and violence prevention and recovery.
  • Inpatient care and overnight/weekend call are not anticipated unless specifically applicable to a fellow’s career goals.
  •

Academic Activities and Leadership Development (45%):

  • During biweekly fellowship seminars, fellows will engage with local and national LGBTQIA+ health leaders while developing foundational skills in LGBTQIA+ health-focused program development, clinical quality improvement (QI), education and training, community engagement, health policy and advocacy, and research.
  • Each fellow will conduct a longitudinal, mentored LGBTQIA+ health leadership project, such as developing a new clinical program; performing a clinical QI project; designing and implementing a new curriculum; conducting a community needs assessment; developing a policy brief; or engaging in a collaborative health advocacy effort.
  • Fellows will have numerous opportunities to practice their leadership skills via teaching in one of our LGBTQIA+ health-focused UME, GME, CME (for the Whole Care Team or Training-the-Trainer) or National LGBTQIA+ Health Education Center trainings; collaborating with organizational partners in the rollout of an LGBTQIA+ focused public health program; and serving on the Massachusetts Medical Society LGBTQ Committee.
  • Fellows will receive coaching to disseminate their work widely via local, regional, and national presentations and publications in both the lay press and peer-reviewed journals.

Community Engagement (10%):

  • Fellows will learn about the unique needs of specific LGBTQIA+ communities through visits with a wide variety of Boston-area LGBTQIA+ organizations. They will then select one organization to host their community engagement project and assist in moving that organization’s work forward.

Mentorship and Support:

  • Mentorship is a signature focus of the HMS-Fenway LGBTQIA+ Health Fellowship Program. Each fellow will have a:
    • Core Clinical Site Mentor who will supervise the fellow’s primary care practice.
    • Leadership Mentor who will provide guidance on the fellow’s longitudinal, LGBTQIA+ health leadership project.
  • Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in a broad spectrum of activities and supports offered by the DEI programs at HMS, each HMS affiliate, and Fenway Health.
